Hughlett Point is part of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail system. Possible sightings include Bald Eagles, Osprey, Merlins, Northern Harriers, Pine and Yellow-rumped Warblers, Royal and Forster Terns, Dunlins, Brown Pelicans, Great Egrets, Spotted and Semipalmated Sandpipers, Semipalmated Plovers, Brown Creepers, Eastern Phoebes, Catbirds, Swamp and White-throated Sparrows, Belted Kingfishers, Flickers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets and early arriving swans, ducks and geese that frequent Hughlett Point in the Fall and Winter.

Over 184 species of birds have been reported at the preserve.
