Bird Walk at Windmill Point in Lancaster County

  • Windmill Point 56 Windjammer Lane White Stone, VA, 22578 United States (map)

On Saturday, November 25, the Northern Neck Audubon Society will conduct a bird walk at Windmill Point led by Jeff Wright.

Windmill Point, the easternmost part of Lancaster County, juts out into the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Rappahannock River.  This is an excellent location for seeing a variety of bird species as It is listed as a birding hotspot on eBird, an online database of bird observations providing scientists, researchers and amateur naturalists with real-time data about bird distribution and abundance.   This area of the Northern Neck is a wintering area for migrating waterfowl and possible sightings include tundra swans, buffleheads, mergansers, loons, gulls, and bald eagles.

The walk will begin at 9 a.m. at Windmill Point Beach.  From the stoplight in White Stone, drive east approximately 8 miles to the end of Windmill Point Road (Route 695) where the group will meet.  The group will walk along the shoreline of the beach and in the parking areas of Windmill Point Marina along the water.
