On Monday December 10 at 9:00 am, the Northern Neck Audubon Society (NNAS) will conduct a bird walk at George Washington Birthplace National Monument Park on Pope’s Creek between Montross and Oak Grove in Westmoreland County.
This is a fascinating time of year to bird watch as the migrating waterfowl are arriving, sometimes in great numbers. The National Park Service allows visitors to view wildlife at the birthplace of our first president. In addition to wildlife, the park offers stunning vistas of the Potomac River from beautiful bluffs. There are woods, ponds, Popes Creek, open fields and beaches. Possible sightings include: bald eagles, Canada geese (in great numbers), white fronted geese, great blue herons, terns, gulls, loons, wild turkeys, tundra swans, buffleheads and hooded mergansers.
The GPS address is 1732 Popes Creek Road, Colonial Beach, VA 22443. Those driving directly should meet at 9:00 am at the visitor center parking lot.
Directions from Kilmarnock and Warsaw:
Take Route 3 west through Montross. About ¼ mile past Potomac Mills, turn right on Pope’s Creek Road (Route 204). Proceed to the park.
Warm clothing is recommended. There will be loaner binoculars available. For cancellations additional information about the NNAS and activities, check the website at www.northernneckaudubon.org.
