The Middle Peninsula Audubon Christmas Bird Count is being organized for Sunday December 29, 2019, 8 am to 2 or 3 pm. The NEW count will include parts of Gloucester, Middlesex, and King and Queen counties.
All, this is a heads up that the 4th Annual Northumberland-Lancaster Christmas Bird Count is on Tuesday 17 Dec 2019.
October Big Day is scheduled for Oct. 19, where volunteers count as many birds as they can observe in the 24 hour period and report their lists to e-bird.
A BioBlitz is an intense period of biological surveying with the objective of identify all living species within a tract of the Refuge. During this BioBlitz, biologists and citizen scientists will have the opportunity to explore our newest Refuge tract while contributing valuable data to the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
This Friday through Monday (15-18 Feb) is the annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). This is one of the premier citizen science projects world wide and was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real-time.

The 3rd Northumberland-Lancaster Christmas Bird Count is on Tuesday 18 Dec. The event again this year is sponsored by NNAS. Last year the event identified over 100 species.

The Northern Neck Audubon Society is a sponsor of the event for the second year in a row. This is part of the 118th National Audubon Christmas Bird that has close to 75,000 participants in the United States, Canada and other area of the Western Hemisphere. 2,536 separate Christmas Bird Count “circles”are included in the 117th Christmas Bird Count database.
At the inaugural Northumberland-Lancaster Christmas Bird Count in 2016 ninety-one (91) species were recorded by the 37 participants.
The Christmas Bird Count circle covers most of the eastern portions of the two counties. The “circle” includes ample opportunities to observe shore birds and waterfowl along the Chesapeake Bay and associated wetlands as well as a wide variety of birds found in the forests, farms, vineyards, three Natural Area Preserves, and towns in Northumberland and Lancaster Counties on the Northern Neck of Virginia. The count circle is divided into 9 sectors. Sector leaders establish meeting times for their sectors. A mid-afternoon “reception, take-a-break, and compiling" session is planned.
Novice Birders are welcomed and will be paired with experienced birders.
